Message from CEO Doug Johnson:

In the past weeks, Iowans have witnessed both tragedy and triumph, some looking up from their basements to see a spring sky where their home should have been, others wading through the rivers of what were once their city streets. We grieve for their losses, especially for the families and friends who lost loved ones in the spring tornadoes and flooding that caused so much devastation across Iowa.

We find our strength in the brighter stories, those of the thousands of volunteers aiding neighbors and strangers, of the rare triumph over rising waters, of an LSI employee who filled sandbags at a client’s house, despite knowing at that moment water was pouring into her own home.

Tornadoes are gone in seconds and rivers become lakes in hours, but recovery can last years. LSI’s disaster response program is here to walk with Iowans on that long road. We weather the storms in our communities with the long-term in mind, knowing as time passes more and more needs will become known.

When so much is lost, we turn to what we find left. And across the state, we are finding signs of the gritty resilience of Iowans and of what it means to love your neighbor.

LSI is here for the long journey. It’s our prayer for Iowa and for each of you that all will be well.

Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through acts of service to all.

Called by God's spirit and in response to Christ's love, this social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will serve as Jesus served. As a part of the Church's mission, we trust God will work through us to bring health, hope and healing to the world and to advocate for the dignity of our neighbors in community.

Who do we serve?
LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and the three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

• We focus on the whole family and seek to meet their needs.
• We start our work where the client is at with language they can understand.

• We believe families have the ability to find their own solutions. Our job is to create the environment for this to happen. It is the family who decides the course they will take.
