Contacting your local legislators is important - they do hear you! Congressional Representatives and Senators consider constituent mail, personal visits, and telephone calls to be the most important kind of communications in developing positions on issues and legislation.

How to Write/E-mail Your Policymaker

Letters and e-mails are important, even critical, to influence legislation. Persuasive written messages are effective, efficient, and timely. E-mails should be written just as you would write or compose a letter. Here are some guidelines to follow in writing and effective letter or e-mail:

1. Remeber to include your name and address.
2. Be specific; stick to one bill or subject.
3. Be knowledgeable.
4. Write as an individual, concerned citizen.
5. Mention if you live in the legislator's district. They like to be responsive to their own constituents.
